Waste plan given $20m
Christchurch City Council has indicated it would spend up to $20 million from 2008 on improvements to the city's kerbside rubbish and recycling systems.
That sum is likely to feature in the draft Long-Term Community Plan which will be finalised on 9 March and released for public feedback at the end of the month.
Last month, the Council decided to set up a working party to explore how it could best work towards its waste reduction goals. All current and possible options would be considered. At the same meeting, the Council withdrew a December decision to move to a system of providing a fortnightly wheelie bin collection for recyclable material and continuing to provide a rates-funded collection system and 26 rubbish bags a household.
On the new working party will be councillors Carole Evans, Bob Shearing, Graham Condon and Sally Buck, staff and invited parties. It will develop a solution which works towards the vision, goals and targets contained in the draft Waste Management Plan 2005.
