Townend buried at St Peter's

During recent consultation on the Linwood Cemetery Conservation Plan, Annie Quayle Townend was said to be buried at the cemetery. In fact, this famous local identity is buried at St Peter's Church graveyard in Yaldhurst.

Annie Townend was the daughter of wealthy wool baron George Henry Moore, and when she died in 1914, was the richest woman in the South Island.

She is best known for her ownership of Mona Vale. She was responsible for the construction of Mona Vale's lodge on Fendalton Road and adding the bath house from the 1906-07 exhibition to its grounds.

Townend House in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens was named in gratitude to her for leaving the city the large conservatory and orchid house that was originally located on the site.
