Korea Day in the Square celebration, Sat, 4 March
Do you fancy your chances as a Korean wrestler? Christchurch's Korean Society is organising a Korea Day celebration in Cathedral Square on Saturday, 4 March, and the traditional sport will be showcased with novices able to test their skill in a variety of age divisions.
Christchurch recognises 1 March as Korea Day and the weekend event has been organised to showcase Korean culture. For the Ssireum wrestling, organisers say places are limited, so hopefuls should wear shorts, bring some proof of age and ID and arrive before 10am and make themselves known to the organisers. Entry is on first-come basis. There is a return airfare to Korea for the winner.
Organisers say the city's kiwi Koreans will mostly be in traditional dress so it will be very colourful in the Square. Some people will be wearing special ceremonial royal outfits sent especially from Korea.
- The event, from 11am to 3pm, will also feature traditional food, demonstrations of martial arts and other cultural performances. Children can have their name written in traditional Korean calligraphy.
