Top Crashbash Script Picked
St Andrew’s College student Bridie Connell is the winner of this year’s Crashbash scriptwriting competition. Her entry Ebony Tears, about the things that can happen when you drink and drive apart from being killed or killing others, combined humour, tragedy and youth appeal, the judges said.
Crashbash is a Council-supported high school scriptwriting competition which encourages young people to think about the risks of driving while intoxicated. The winner’s script is developed by professional actors and is performed around high schools.
Judging convenor Elizabeth O’Connor said Bridie’s characters were in a band. “Although the band doesn’t play on stage, we may be looking for musical actors who can play instruments. The winner is a clever writer with a lot of theatre experience, and Crashbash looks forward to collaborating with her on script development,” she said.
This year’s Crashbash tour, Moment of Choice, visited 25 high schools in greater Christchurch in the six weeks leading up to 17 March and was seen by about 19,000 students. Also supporting Crashbash are Land Transport New Zealand and Students Against Driving Drunk.
