New Rebate Scheme Could Get $500 Off Your Rates

The Government has recently upgraded its rates rebate scheme. It means more people will be eligible to receive the rebate.

The scheme is to help low income earners. The amount of rebate depends on a combination of income, the amount of rates you pay and the number of dependants you have.

You may be eligible if: you are single, living alone and your income is low; your total household income (including that of your spouse) is under $20,000; your total income is higher than $20,000 but you have dependants living with you; or you are a couple on NZ Superannuation and your yearly rates bill is more than $1000 and you have no dependants.

If you think you qualify:

  • Please wait for your 2006/7 rate account to arrive
  • Pick up a form from any City Council service centre or library, or call 941 8999 or 0800 800 169 for one to be sent to you, or download it from ratesinfo.ccc.govt.nz/ratesrebate
  • Complete the form and get an authorised person to sign it (details on the form) and send to PO Box 237 Christchurch. We will advise you of your rebate,

OR

  • Complete the form, then ring 941 8888 or 0800 800 169 and make an appointment to come to one of our service centres.

To apply you need to have: your 2006/07 rate account and proof of income – this could be a statement from Work and Income, IRD summary of earnings from your employer(s), statement of interest from your bank, details of share dividends, copy of your audited accounts if you are self-employed or any combination of the above.

If you receive a benefit, we need your benefit number (the easiest way to do this is to bring in your Community Services Card)
