First Antarctica Scholarship

Seen here in Fiordland, Tim Hay’s next scientific work will be done in Antarctica

University of Canterbury scientist Tim Hay has been named recipient of the first Christchurch City Council Antarctica Scholarship and will use the $10,000 award to further his doctoral research into ozone depletion.

The scholarship aims to help with research costs, travel, fees and living expenses and is supported by an Antarctica New Zealand commitment to provide the winner’s travel to and accommodation at Scott Base.

“I’m delighted,” Tim says. “Many thanks to the City Council and Antarctica NZ. The scholarship and support will be a great help and it is very much appreciated. I also want to acknowledge the support I get from NIWA.

“My research is looking at ozone depletion in the troposphere, specifically in the boundary layer above the sea ice, which is the lowest few hundred metres of atmosphere. This is a separate issue from the ozone hole in the stratosphere …”

The work will help understanding about climate change and of the subsequent melting of sea ice on the chemistry of polar regions.

The scholarship will allow him to spend two seasons in Antarctica. The postgraduate scholarship is for University of Canterbury students, for research of importance to the understanding of Antarctica or the Southern Ocean. It is awarded by the board of Gateway Antarctica.
