Become a friend of Botanic Gardens

A group which supports and helps preserve, protect and promote the Botanic Gardens is looking for new members.

The Friends group began in 1989 and its members have contributed a great deal to this central city treasure. As well as learning more about plants and botany, members of the Friends volunteer as Gardens guides for local and overseas groups and sometimes work alongside staff on projects to achieve a high standard of presentation. They also meet regularly and have interesting guest speakers.

“It’s perfect for anyone interested in botany, horticulture or just interested in promotion of the Gardens generally,” says member Alison Fox. “We have very interesting meetings and we’re a pretty sociable group. If your children have left home and you’ve got a bit of time on your hands, the Gardens is a wonderful place to show some support to.

“They’re a wonderful asset. Around the world there’s very few places with botanic gardens that you can walk to in just a few minutes from the city centre.”

  • Annual membership is just $16. Anyone interested should call Ruby Coleman on 355 8811. More information about the Botanic Gardens and the Friends is on the Council’s website, under “associated groups” at www.ccc.govt.nz/parks/botanicgardens
