Pushing the boat out

Heathcote River Day is a local favourite and it’s back again on 26 November. The journey down the Heathcote River starts at 2.30pm from the Ensors Road bridge, with the get-in point upstream at the jetty outside the Waltham Lido Pool.

Home-made rafts, canoes and all sorts of other watercraft have traditionally been involved with lots of fun for families and friends. This free community event is also great entertainment for spectators.

Event categories include junior, intermediate and senior/family and there will be prizes for the best designed and decorated craft, fair play, first across the line and for the best-dressed participants.

The prize-giving and a sausage sizzle will be held after the event at the St Martins Scout Den.

Organised by local community organisations in partnership with the City Council, Heathcote River Day is funded by the Spreydon/Heathcote Community Board and supported by City Care and Blue Light Canterbury.

Information packs will be distributed to local schools at the end of October and will also be available from the Beckenham Service Centre/South Christchurch Library. Registration is free.

  • Registration will be on the day at the get-in point outside Waltham Lido Pool. Please be there at 1.30pm to register, get your boat checked and then float downstream to the start point. For more information phone 941 5107.
