Practical gardening help

The many thousands of keen gardeners whose energy and enthusiasm underpins Christchurch’s garden-city reputation are the target of a new series of free practical demonstrations and discussions being hosted by staff at the Botanic Gardens.

These informative events take place at 12.15pm on one Tuesday each month and are planned to provide timely seasonal advice and information for local gardeners and enthusiasts wanting to increase their knowledge. They start from Cunningham House.

This month’s topic is the rock garden.

Last month got to grips with vegetable gardening. This month’s outing takes place on 25 October and the topic is the rock garden. It will be hosted by Malcolm Shirlaw, one of the Gardens’ longest-serving and experienced curators.

Next month, on Tuesday 22 November, the topic is woodland gardens — heritage roses and primula, taken by collection curator Richard Poole.

The Gardens Information Centre has a new display starting this month. Colour in Nature runs for three months, exploring the use of colour by both the natural world and the Botanic Gardens.
