New sculpture for Beckenham

South Island artist Graham Bennett has been chosen to create a new sculpture for Christchurch’s South Library and Beckenham Service Centre. The artwork will reflect the site and its history, complementing the building opened in 2003.

Bennett’s work is already well known in the city. His Reasons for Voyaging sculpture provides a monumental welcome to Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu, and he also created the city’s memorial sculpture from materials taken from the World Trade Centre site, gifted to the Christchurch Firefighters’ Association by the City of New York.

The new artwork will be funded from Christchurch City Council’s Artwork in Public Places fund.

The initial concept for the sculpture has been completed, and detailed designs will be on display in the Library, for public comment, from later in the month. The sculpture is expected to be installed by the end of June 2006.
