Hei Hei set to party

Hei Hei is holding a free celebration of local life on Saturday, 29 October. Based at Hei Hei Community Centre and next-door Wycola Park, the event runs from 11am to 3pm, with lots of activities for the whole family, live stage performances, sports, games, special prizes, and food stalls.

Entertainment on offer will include a local brass band, kapahaka and dance performances, and cultural singing. There'll also be donkey rides, a bouncy castle, representatives of the Scenic Circle Canterbury Rams playing basketball, kite-making, hockey, indoor bowls, spiritual reading, card-making and cake stalls. All the entertainment and activities are free.

Council Recreation Coordinator Gina Stewart says the event gives the Hei Hei community the chance to get together and enjoy what the neighbourhood has to offer.

"The event kicks off Christchurch Neighbourhood Week, and there's no better place to see the community pulling together to celebrate their neighbourhood than here in Hei Hei. It's going to be a great day, and we're right behind the community as they get ready for this event. There'll be heaps to do, and it's all free."

The event is supported by the Riccarton/Wigram Community Board, SPARC (Sport & Recreation NZ) and the Canterbury Community Trust.

  • Hei Hei Community Centre is at 12 Wycola Ave, next to Wycola Park
