Giants of photography
Works by two of the 20th century’s greatest photographers, Ansel Adams and Cecil Beaton, will be showcased in upcoming exhibitions, the first of which opens at Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu on 21 October.
The Ansel Adams showing, Photographic Frontiers promises to be a highlight of the Gallery’s 2005 exhibition schedule. It runs until the end of January and this is its only New Zealand exhibition.
A Cecil Beaton show called Portraits, which opens in May next year, was organised by the National Portrait Gallery in London. It achieved that gallery’s second-largest audience and also was acclaimed when shown last year in Edinburgh. Again, the Christchurch Art Gallery will be the only New Zealand venue.
American photographer Adams is most famous for his landscapes of American national parks. The 72 works are a selection chosen by Adams as examples of what he considered to be his best work.
Beaton is one of the most celebrated British portrait photographers, renowned for his portraits of famous faces from the worlds of fashion, literature and film. His long and varied career and his ability to attune himself to changing fashions enabled him to capture a diverse range of subjects.
"The Gallery is delighted to exhibit such wonderful and different photographs, from the sheer beauty of America’s wilderness to the social whirl of British celebrity and glamour," says Hubert Klaassens, the Public Programmes Manager.
Support for the Season of Photography has come from Strategy Advertising and Design, Tasman Charitable Trust, The Press and Aalto Colour. Both exhibitions will charge admission.
