Display plays visible role in moves to clear the air

Pupils from Rowley Avenue School in Hoon Hay help unveil the Clear Visionfor Clean Heat sculpture, which will remain in Cathedral Square until 21October before being moved to other high-visibility Christchurch locations. The sculpture demonstrates the improvements in air quality needed toachieve the National Air Standard of no more than one high-pollution daya year by 2013. The task is supported by Environment Canterbury’s (ECan)Clean Heat Project, which provides subsidies to help Christchurch homes convert from open fires and solid fuel burners to cleaner and more efficientforms of heating as well as insulating their homes. ECan this month calledfor submissions on a new proposal which, if approved, would providean interest-free loan for 10 years to qualifying homeowners to pay forreplacement heating and insulation. The loan would be repaid througha targeted rate on the properties. Christchurch Mayor Garry Mooresays the proposal is along the lines of what has been suggested by the City Council. "I’m very supportive ofcleaning up our air and of people having access to a scheme like thisthat would allow them to install clean-burning wood-burners."

  • ECan’s new loan proposal is available at Christchurch City Council’s Tuam St office, service centres and libraries, as well as at Environment Canterbury’s Kilmore St office, online at www.cleanheat.org.nz or by phoning 353 9276. Submissions close on 4 November
