Volunteers needed for holiday programmes

If you’re over 16 and will have time on your hands during the September school holidays, why not take up the challenge of volunteering on Christchurch City Council’s holiday programmes?

The programmes run every school holiday at 10 locations across the city, offering the five-to-12 age group a range of organised games, activities and trips.

Holiday programme co-ordinator Amy Sewell is looking for people to contact her now with a view to volunteering over the upcoming holidays.

“If you’ve got sport, art or craft skills, experience of coaching children, running play schemes or childcare, you could be one of our new volunteer programme leaders.”

Amy says her ideal volunteer is someone with a strong sense of fun, lots of enthusiasm, plenty of patience, and someone not afraid of getting stuck into anything from clay to cookery.

“It’s a great way to gain new skills and work experience — and you won’t be out of pocket as there’s a generous daily allowance to cover your expenses.”

Courtney Spain (17), travels from West Melton to Linwood every day to be a holiday programme volunteer.

“One of my friends started volunteering and told me how great it was. It’s good fun, it’s giving me really good experience and there’s always something new to learn. If you think it sounds like you, definitely give it a go. You might feel a bit unsure at the start, but once you get going, you’ll really get into it and enjoy it,” she says.

Amy is particularly keen to hear from people who’d like to volunteer on a longer-term basis, including during the summer holidays. Volunteers are reimbursed $25.30 a day to cover travel and meal expenses, and before starting, will need to undergo a police check and sign a Council volunteer agreement.

Volunteers must be able to commit to at least one week of volunteering during the September holidays, on weekdays, from 9am to 3pm.
