Spaces to suit the community’s needs

A visit to Parklands Library will be unlike any other, with unique ‘time zones’ appealing to different customers at different times of the day.

‘Revive’ (Tue, Thu 1-3pm, Wed, Fri 10am-noon) is adult time in the library, with everything set up to help adults relax. Browse the latest books, magazines, online resources, DVDs and CDs, or chat with friends over coffee.

‘Play’ (Tue, Thu 10am-noon, Mon, Wed, Fri 1-3pm) is preschooler time. Children and their parents/caregivers can have a great time. There’ll be small furniture, music and plenty of space to have some fun. ‘Play’ will also offer special programmes for younger children, which will be advertised.

After school, ‘Breakout’ (Mon to Fri 3-5pm) offers study support with entertainment, games and computers. It’ll be a lively, interactive time with staff on hand to help with homework and recreational needs.

Saturday is ‘Relax’ (10am-4pm). The doors open for all to enjoy what the library has to offer, from information to entertainment, reading to Playstation games, a coffee or snack at the café. Relax on a big sofa in winter or in the sculpture courtyard in summer.

Finally, with the library’s role as a centre for the community in mind, ‘Connect’ (Mon 10am-noon) is a time when community groups can book or use the library as they please. Staff will organise the space to suit their needs, for meetings, talks, book groups or for any business group which would like to use the space.

Of course, regardless of what ‘time zone’ you’re in, all customers are welcome to use the library at any time.

The approach is a first for libraries, and Christchurch idea that will be closely watched by other libraries both in New Zealand and overseas. Be one of the first to experience it.
