Peace Week 6-12 August
Peace Week, an annual initiative organised by various community groups working towards peace, gets under way on 6 August.
The first event is the 30th successive Lantern Ceremony. This will feature a candlelit ceremony with the message: “ Hiroshima, Nagasaki, never again”. There will also be speakers from Hiroshima, music, poetry and a procession of lantern floats on the Avon River.
Other events during Peace Week include:
- Two photographic exhibitions to demonstrate the devastation caused by the nuclear industry and how individuals can help create a nuclear-free world. The exhibitions will be at Our City O-Tautahi from 1-6 August and the University of Canterbury Library from 8-12 August.
- A visual display on Hiroshima and Nagasaki will be installed in the Central Library and in the Council’s Civic Offices in Tuam Street.
- There will also be a premier of Tau Te Mauri/Breath of Peace at the Academy Theatre on Sunday, 7 August at 7.15pm. There will be further screenings throughout the week. Bookings are essential.
- Peace Poetry will also be held on 6 August at 6pm in the TV1 Pavilion at Victoria Square as part of the Applaud Festival.
