Update on CCC draft Road Safety Strategy

About 20 submissions were received by the Christchurch City Council on its draft Road Safety Strategy, including three from primary schools.

A full analysis of the submissions is yet to be completed, however a quick glance shows that most submissions seem in favour of the draft document’s strategic goals and targets.

Lots of good ideas about coordinating actions were received. Some submitters said there was a need to reduce speed around all schools – not just the few selected by the Council for the 40kmh zone projects, while others sought improved pedestrian crossings and islands.

Submissions also voiced concern at there being no mention of people with disabilities in the strategy, along with the factor of an ageing population. There was a need to consider “wheeled pedestrians” such as electrified scooters and children on scooters.

In response, an additional section will be added to the final Road Safety Strategy to cover the needs and concerns of people with disabilities.
