While the chill in the air prompts many to arrange mid-winter Christmas parties, for the producers of Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park it’s a signal to step up preparations.

Auditions for the show will take place in Christchurch during July and artistic producer Kate Ward-Smythe is on the look out for experienced adult singers and youngsters for the children’s Christmas choir.

“Last year the turn out was tremendous and we cast nearly half the Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park programme from those we found in Christchurch and Auckland,” says Kate.

While professional experience isn’t always necessary, the concerts have a 10-year history of showcasing only the best so standards at the auditions will be high. Successful singers will have the opportunity to perform in front of about 120,000 people in Christchurch.

Coca-Cola is once again using the event to support Youthline.

By partnering with this organisation, funds will be raised to further increase counselling services and provide development opportunities for New Zealand youth.

Youthline director Stephen Bell says the relationship has helped Youthline extend its hours.

“Funds raised through Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park have contributed to the Youth Help Line service now being available 16 hours a day, seven days a week. We are now able to take around 2,500 calls per month and the www.urge.co.nz website provides advice and assistance at any time,” says Mr Bell.

The Christchurch City Council has provided $51,500 funding for this year’s event.

  • Audition dates: Saturday 17 & Sunday 18 July: 10am – 7pm (Call-backs Sun 1-3pm). Venue: Christchurch Jazz School, corner High and Madras streets.
