Lots on at Avice Hill Craft Centre


Set in an attractive wooded reserve, the Avice Hill Craft Centre is a superb community facility operated by the Christchurch City Council.

The centre features a craft studio suitable for any type of art or craft, an activities room to cater for about 20 people and a meeting room suitable for small gatherings of up to 10 people.

Some of the activities that are available are:

Avice Hill Jazz Group

Musicians of all ages with a passion for music in a jazz style are invited to join the group. The activities room at the centre provides a warm and comfortable non-threatening environment for people keen to perform.

Meetings are held on Tuesday 7–8.30pm during school terms. Anyone interested, please leave a message on 351 5524. Fees are $30 a term.

Origami Society of NZ

The society is planning to hold workshops every second Wednesday of the month. While these will generally be cardmaking workshops, the society is keen to teach any topic that people are interested in, including jewellery, decorations and boxes. Christmas card workshops are planned for October and November.

As well, beginners and advanced origami courses are held on Sunday afternoons, once there is minimum group. For more information contact secretary Ray Spring on 981 9214 or teacher Marina Vermaat on 03 312 4731.

Children’s art classes

Children are able to explore their creativity and learn skills to help them visually communicate their ideas, thoughts and feelings.

Classes are 90 minutes and cost $140 per term (10 weeks). All materials are provided, including afternoon tea. Contact Nina Cook for more information on 365 0653.

Chch West La Leche League

The group meets at 10am on the second Monday of each month. Upcoming topics include: 12 July – the art of breastfeeding and avoiding difficulties; 9 August – your baby’s changing needs; 13 September – enjoying the benefits that breastfeeding offers; 11 October – childbirth and your new baby at home.

  • The City Council advocacy team at the Fendalton Service Centre, cnr Jeffreys and Clyde roads, welcomes inquiries from anyone wanting to book the centre for new programmes or one-off events. Contact the team on 941 6731 between 8am and 4.30pm Mon – Fri. Rental charges given at time of booking.
