Speed limit changes

New speed limits are being introduced in some areas of the city from this month.

The changes affect mainly four areas including Burwood/Marshlands; Charleston; Sumner; and the four-lane sections of Aldwins, Buckleys and Pages roads (from Ferry Road through to Kearneys Road).

Some roads in Burwood / Marshlands that had a 100 km/h speed limit have been reduced to 80 km/h, bringing them into line with the average speed vehicles travel on these roads. Roads affected include Lower Styx Road, Kianga Road, Spencerville Road and Belfast Road.

Two new 40 km/h speed zones have been established. Speed limits have been reduced on the Charleston cluster of streets from 50 km/h to 40 km/h as well as The Esplanade in Sumner, and portions of some adjoining streets.

The other change is the rise in speed limit in the four-lane sections of Aldwins Road, Buckleys Road and Pages Road from 50 km/h to 60 km/ h. Improvements to this arterial route include upgraded pedestrian signals at the Kerrs Road junction and outside Linwood College.

The new speed limits have been adjusted to match actual speed vehicles can safely travel on the road — whether motorists keep to the speed limit or whether they tend to drive faster or slower on the road. The implementation of the new speed limits is being staggered, although each location should have their new speed signs by mid March.
