High water users targeted

High users of water in the north and north-eastern suburbs of Christchurch are being targeted by the City Council as part of its “Waterwise” campaign to encourage people to use less water and protect the water supply.

During February, the top 20 per cent of domestic water users are being sent letters advising them that their consumption is high compared with the city’s average, along with tips on how they can save water. They can contact the Council and if necessary arrange a site visit to the property to help identify if there is a leak or if water is being wasted.

Already some significant leaks have been picked up, and some old, faulty meters replaced. The campaign to target high water users started in February 2003 with the eastern
and north-eastern suburbs.

High users in other areas will be contacted over the next two years.

Did you know…..

The average Christchurch household uses 600 litres of water in winter each day and about twice that during a warm summer. An unusual aspect of water use in Christchurch is the large variation in the amount of water used, depending on the season, climate, and time of day. The largest demand for water typically occurs around 9pm on a hot summer evening.

Stay waterwise, Council urges

The Council is continuing to urge people to keep up their waterwise habits to avoid pressure drops and the need for restrictions if another long hot spell emerges.

  • Good ideas on how to conserve water are available at www.ccc.govt.nz/Water/ Working together to save water Garden centres around the city recently met with City Council staff to discuss how they could help spread the message to the public on saving water around the home and garden. The aim is to help people make informed decisions on watering, mulching etc.
  • A handy tips card and a booklet are available from participating garden centres and Council Service Centres.
