Dropping litter will cost you

Being a litterbug could cost you a $100 instant fine.

Our parking wardens are able to give these instant fines and will be keeping a special eye out over the next few months to catch and fine those people who think litter is someone else’s problem. This applies not only to those walking along streets but also to litterbugs who drop litter from cars.

In recent years there has been growing demand for regular cleaning of litter along suburban streets. This service is in addition to the regular gutter sweeping.

We now spend nearly $280,000 per year on picking up litter from streets all over Christchurch. Mayor Garry Moore launched an awareness campaign in early December to highlight this growing problem.

  • Groups which volunteer to clean up public spaces can get free rubbish bags or coupons for dumping from the City Council. Ph 941 8830.
  • Some people tell the Council that the charges at Transfer Stations is a problem. In fact, you are able to take up to three Council black bags a week to the Transfer Stations — for free.
