Pier fishers asked to think of others

People who fish off Christchurch Pier are being asked to be considerate of other pier users and the environment. Coastal parks ranger Ian Surgenor says there are regularly problems on the pier, with people overhead casting and taking undersize fish.

Too many crabs have also been taken from the New Brighton area and crab pots are now banned.

To keep others around you safe, Mr Surgenor says, you should drop your fishing line into the water or undercast. He also asks that people use the cutting and washing boards provided on the pier and keep clear of the no-fishing zone.

“If you follow the rules at the pier, you’ll make the most of a fantastic opportunity to experience South Island offshore fishing, while still on firm ground,” he says.

Information and guidelines about fish species are on information panels attached to the pier railings. As a general rule, fish under 23cm long must be returned to the sea.

Species which can be caught from the pier include red cod, kahawai, dogfish and mullet.

Diving off the pier is also prohibited and users are asked not to take their dogs on to the area. “Take them for a run along the beach instead,” Mr Surgenor says.
