Nominations open for Heritage Awards
The Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board is now calling for
nominations from the public for its 2004 Heritage Awards.
Now in their eighth year, the annual awards recognise efforts
by individuals or groups in the community to preserve the
built or constructed character and heritage of the Hagley/
Ferrymead area.
Entry is open to any heritage or character building, place
or object within the Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board
area. Residential, commercial/retail, industrial or
institutional buildings may be entered, as well as
streetscape or community heritage areas.
One award will be made for each of seven
categories:
- Retention – For a building previously under threat
of demolition, but now secured for the future
- Conservation and Restoration – For an item now
being conserved or restored, or which has been in
the last year
- Education and Awareness – For an initiative that promotes heritage education and awareness
- Children – For an initiative that raises awareness of
heritage among young people and encourages them to be
proactive within their local environment
- Good Caretaker – Recognises a property owner who
has maintained their property in original or near-original
condition for some years
- Pre-1850 Award – Recognises a Maori and European
cultural heritage site that was significant to tangata
whenua before organised European settlement
- Christchurch Star Award – Recognises efforts by
a business or retailer in the central city, to preserve
or maintain a heritage building
- Nominations close on Friday, 6 August. The
awards will be presented in the chapel at the Music
Centre of Christchurch on Friday, 10 September.
