Mid-winter fun day for older residents

Mid-winter was celebrated in the east of the city by about 300 older residents who toured around six local venues enjoying tea parties, indoor games, entertainment, health checks and other activities.

On 29 June, six community venues in the east of town offered a special programme for the day. Avebury House provided a continuous Victorian tea party, Avonside Holy Trinity Church offered a health and welfare programme, and Te Whare Roimata/ Linwood Community Arts Centre provided arts and dance activities. A free bus provided transport between the venues.

The mid-winter celebration tour was provided by Christchurch City Council and the Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board, along with the participating community venues. Diana Saxton, the Council’s Community Recreation Advisor, says the day was a tremendous success. “Everyone involved in the day — participants, organisers, performers, volunteers and drivers — really enjoyed it.”

Ms Saxton wants to find if there would be interest in a regular tai chi exercise class at the Richmond Methodist Church hall on
Stanmore Road. If you want to take part, call her on 941 6628.
