Air standards welcomed

Regional Council Environment Canterbury (ECan) has welcomed the national air quality standards released by the Government last month.

“It’s good to know the government has been listening to this community,” says Richard Budd, chairman of ECan’s air quality portfolio committee.

“The initial proposal from the Ministry for the Environment was that Christchurch would have to achieve these standards over a three- to four-year time frame.

“We emphasised the importance of our local planning processes. The new date of 2013 specified in the Ministry standards lines up with the timeline in our proposed plan. I’m very pleased that Government has accepted the local view.”

Cr Budd says the new national standard for solid fuel burners in urban areas is not as strict as those in ECan’s proposed Air Plan.

“However, the standards allow for stricter measures to be imposed where it is agreed that local conditions make it necessary,” Cr Budd says.

“We look forward to discussions with the Ministry on assistance for incentives schemes to achieve these objectives.”
