Scenic self-drive guide

Christchurch City Council has put together a scenic self-drive guide which shows you how to explore, at leisure, many fascinating sites in the Christchurch area and see some of the country's most beautiful and spectacular scenery.

Lisa Hoffman, CCC Promotion Coordinator, says the guide features three drives around Christchurch - Gardens (19km), Avon River (32km) and Port Hills (46km). All start and finish at Our City O-Tautahi on Oxford Terrace, and cover sites of recreational, geographical, ecological and historical interest such as Beverley Park, New Brighton Pier and Library (shown above), Horseshoe Lake Reserve, Mona Vale, Riccarton House and Bush, the Botanic Gardens, The Arts Centre, Edmonds Factory Gardens, Rapaki and Castle Rocks and the Avon- Heathcote Estuary.

Cyclists may also find the guide useful. They may, however, decide to get off the main roads. For example, the Garden Drive travels along Riccarton Avenue past the Nurses' Memorial Chapel, and cyclists may instead choose to use one of the many cycleways through Hagley Park on their way to the next destination - Mona Vale.

  • Copies of the free brochure are available from the Council's Civic Offices in Tuam Street, or by emailing christchurch@ccc.govt.nz
