Right plant, right place — PGW chair
Debate about what trees should grow along the Avon River in the Central City is timely and reinforces the need for a planned planting strategy for Christchurch, says Councillor Carole Anderton, Chair of the Parks, Gardens and Waterways Committee. "This is not about natives versus exotics," she says. "It's about good design, and the most appropriate planting for a particular setting. All the best features of the Garden City are enhanced by the use of the right plants in the right place. "Christchurch people are great at debating this sort of thing. The Central City landscape is a very important issue and hopefully the Council and residents can work together to put in place a plan that serve the city well for decades to come," says Cr Anderton. A study of the themes of the Avon River in the central city was recently completed by Council staff. Based on public consultation, it features an analysis of the landscape character along the river, and identifies areas that need to be protected and enhanced. A tree assessment and troutspawning survey are also included. |
