Pirate Whopper Chopper 8 Nov

An exciting, free, family event called Whopper Chopper will be held on Saturday, 8 November from noon at New Brighton beach.

Launched in Wellington five years ago as a celebration of our beautiful coastlines and creative talent, the event is coming south to Christchurch for the first time. Seen by the City Council's Burwood/ Pegasus Community Board as a great opportunity, "the Whopper Chopper Seaside Extravaganza is an exciting boost to New Brighton and will provide for a carnival experience," says Don Rowlands, Community Board Chairman.

The Whopper Chopper Seaside Extravaganza is hosting the International Pirates Convention and will be awarding prizes for the Best-Dressed Pirates. The event also includes classic Kiwi school sports day games with entertainment from homegrown bands and DJs. The Whopper Chopper KIDZONE will offer face painting, kite, circus, and painting workshops.

Leading the musical line-up is Fat Freddy's Drop, a Wellingtonbased seven-piece urban roots dance band which has just returned from a tour of Britain and Europe. The band's singer and songwriter is Dallas Tamaira, who began his career in Christchurch. The day will end with the Twilight Film Fiesta, an outdoor screeningof classic reels from the NZ Film Archive and short films, such as The Singing Trophy, Infection and the quirky Playing Possum, from the NZ Film Commission.

Proudly supported by the Burwood/Pegasus Community Board, Whopper Chopper is set to create a carnival atmosphere with activities to entertain the whole family.

The Whopper Chopper Seaside Extravaganza runs from midday to 7pm. The Twilight Film Fiesta is from 9pm to midnight. More information about the event is on the net, at www.whopperchopper.org.nz
