Kidsafe launch
The seventh annual Kidsafe Week ran from 17-24 October, and this year Ilam School hosted the Christchurch launch. Kidsafe week is a national promotion aimed at the prevention of injuries to children. This year's focus was on preventing injuries from cycling and all terrain vehicles (ATVs, or farmbikes), and preventing cutting injuries. The Christchurch Kidsafe Week Coalition celebrated six years of the Christchurch City Council's Cycle Safe programme which tours local primary schools to teach Year 6 (Standard 4) pupils the skills and knowledge they need to cycle safely on the road. On Friday, 17 October, parents and caregivers of pupils at Ilam School were invited to join in the day's activities, which included a Car and Kids display to demonstrate the way small children are almost invisible to drivers backing their vehicles, lessons from St John's Ambulance staff about treating cuts, cycle safety activities and on-road safety tests and incentives for children who took part in the cycle safety programme. |
