Clean Heat scheme launched
A subsidy programme to encourage
Christchurch households to convert to cleaner
heating options will be launched by
Environment Canterbury (ECan)
next week. The regional council’s
Clean Heat Project will
include discounts of up to
$500 on an approved
heater as well as up to 50
per cent off insulation. All
households currently
using an open fire or solid
fuel burner as their main
source of heating in their
living area may qualify for at
least a partial subsidy to convert to
cleaner heating. Homeowners on lower incomes, such as
community service cardholders and those on
benefits, may qualify for up to 100% of the cost of
their main heater and new insulation. The subsidies will also be available
for rental properties, with the
level of discounts to be
negotiated with landlords. The Clean Heat Project
aims to convert more
than 30,000 Christchurch
homes to cleaner
heating over the next 11
years. Home heating is the
main source of winter air
pollution in Christchurch. |
