South Christchurch Library work begins

Construction of the new Library/Service Centre and Learning Centre for South Christchurch has started. The tender has gone to Mainzeal Property and Construction, which began work on the site last week. The Beckenham Service Centre building, which was on the site, has been demolished, with services temporarily relocated to 148 Colombo Street.

The new facility — including a service centre, library, learning centre classrooms, and cafe — are planned to open in June next year, says Council Project Manager Ian McKenzie. When the Architecture Warren and Mahoneydesigned complex is finished it will be among the most environmentally friendly buildings in Christchurch — a request made by the community during the Council’s public consultation process.
