More history than you think
Christchurch City Libraries is offering people the chance to
explore the history of their local area during CarterGroup
Heritage Week 18-25 October. The Central City, Fendalton, Halswell, New Brighton, Shirley
and Sumner libraries will host talks by local historians and
guest speakers during the week. Community Board members and Councillors have been
invited to introduce the speakers and library staff will update
guests on the local history resources held in their library and
across the network. Christchurch City Libraries Manager Sue Sutherland says,
“We know many of our customers are avid genealogists and
interested in history.We have some wonderful resources that
can help and hope people take this opportunity to find out
what we can offer.” Schedule: 22 October — Halswell Library presents “Swamp, soil and
settlement” by local resident Ron Fensom 1–2pm.
Welcome by Bob Shearing. New Brighton Library presents a data show of pictorial
records of the New Brighton Pier including Fundraising
events. Narrated by David Close with welcome by
Councillor Carole Evans 10am–noon. 23 October — Fendalton Library presents local historian
Freda Looser from 6.30-7.30pm. Welcome by Councillor
Barbara Stewart. Shirley Library presents “Dallington/Shirley – the early years”
by Graham Caldwell 2–3pm.Welcome by Glenda Burt. 24 October — Sumner Library presents “Museum in a
suitcase” by Topsy Rule at 6.30pm. Limited space, bookings
recommended on 941 7923. 25 October — Central City Library presents “Just where was
that building? Transformations of the inner city,” by John
Wilson at 12-1pm. Welcome by Councillor Anna Crighton. |
