Heathcote Valley Park dovetails with developers
Provision for $309,000 has been made in the
draft Plan to ensure that two major
developments go ahead as part of the
Heathcote Valley Park project. The Strategy and Resources
Committee proposes
spending $170,000 for stream
diversion, car parking and
landfill rehabilitation to
accommodate the Tamaki
Cultural Village and a golf
course and driving range on
the lower valley floor. Funding of $139,000 has
also been provided in the Plan for parks and
waterways work in the valley, which is being
brought forward to match the programming of
the private developments. Cost-share
arrangements with these companies will offset
some of the expenses. In the recent round of public consultation,
responses over all were favourable to the
Heathcote Valley Park
concept, with support for
the Council to go ahead
with its plans. The
submissions have been
compiled into a summary
report that includes
concerns raised, as well as
the Council’s updated
response and action. Meanwhile, Tamaki Tours’ plans for the multimillion
dollar tourist village are well under way.
Mike Tamaki is moving from Rotorua to
Christchurch in the next few weeks to head the
construction of a pa, amphitheatre and
marketplace. They have been in talks to source
performers, carvers and weavers to entertain
visitors. The golf complex is designed as a family
centre by an international firm of golf
consultants. It will make considerable use of
native planting, to encourage birdlife and
enhance the natural look of the valley. In negotiating lease agreements with these
parties, the Council will require restrictions on
noise, lighting, traffic and operating hours. Copies of the park plan and the
consultation report are available from the Civic
Offices in Tuam Street and at Linwood Service
