Did you know?

DID YOU KNOW. . . That most building work requires a Building Consent before you start the project? Building Consents are required for:

  • Constructing a new building or additions
  • Changing the structure of an existing building
  • Plumbing and/or drainage work
  • Constructing a shed or glasshouse which exceeds 5 square metres in area
  • Demolishing a building
  • Relocation of second-hand buildings
  • Renovation after fire
  • Internal alterations
  • Installing a solid-fuel or liquid-fuel heater
  • Installing a swimming pool or pool fence
  • Any retaining wall over 1.5m above its foundation
  • Any wall or fence of masonry, concrete or timber over 2m in height

There are some exemptions for small jobs such as garden sheds under 5m2 or for enclosing a small porch. If in doubt contact a Building Consent Officer at the Council for advice.

Remember that the requirement to get a Building Consent is to make sure that your building project is completed to a safe standard.

Application forms are available at any of the Council’s Service Centres and these forms list the information required to be lodged with your application.

For more information, visit our website at www.ccc.govt.nz/quickanswers/building/ or call 941 8995.

You may be considering installing a wood-burner.

Remember:

You must obtain a building consent BEFORE installing and arrange an inspection BEFORE lighting the wood-burner. YOUR INSURANCE POLICY MAY REQUIRE THIS

Call 941 8904 to arrange an inspection
