50c more for an indoor swim

City Councillors had a good debate last month before voting to add 50 cents to the cost of a casual swim for young people and children at the Council’s indoor pools – QEII, Pioneer and Centennial.

The City Council had considered lifting the $1.50 casual swim fee for young people (15 years and under) to $2 at all Council pools, but decided it was only warranted at the newer indoor venues.

The councillors heard that the City Council puts about $5.5 million a year of subsidy into its pools to make sure that swimming is an affordable recreation for everyone in the city.

The change to $2 will not effect the price paid by the many schools which use Council pools for their learn-to-swim classes. Their charge will remain at $1 a child.

Community and Leisure Committee chairman Graham Condon said that, even at $2, the Council indoor pools are extremely good value for money.

“You wait till you see what you get at QEII for $2 a kid,” he told last month’s meeting. “Really, it’ll just blow your socks off. It’s recreation for a whole day for $2.”

The new QEII Aquatic Centre is due to open in June. For Information about the Council’s pools and swimming programmes, visit www.ccc.govt.nz/QuickAnswers/Pools/
