Rose Chapel is blooming
The Rose Historic Chapel, next to Maryville Courts on Colombo Street, has been returned to its former glory. The chapel was bought by the council in 1995 and is the only remaining building of the former St Mary's Convent. It is notable for its Gothic-Revival architecture and stunning stained glass windows. Recently the large marble altar was returned to the chapel, after an absence of five years. Outside, the statue of Jesus has been fully restored in its original place in the grounds, which are landscaped with roses, a tranquil pond and shaded lawn areas. Administered by a trust, the chapel is available for weddings, services, meetings and other community uses. Bookings can be made by ringing Jane Ryder on 366 1100. |
