New easy short walk on Port Hills The new Lamar Track, off the Summit Road between Rapaki and Huntsbury Tracks, is now open. It has been designed for people with limited walking ability or for those wanting a short walk. It has no steep gradients and the hard surface is suitable for wheelchairs. Four seats are provided and two plane tables name the features visible from the location. The track circles a memorial to children who died in the snow in 1883, and returns to an offroad parking area. It is a good place from which to view sunsets. The track was opened last month by Brian Shackel of the Lamar Charitable Trust that made a large donation to the cost. The track creation was a joint project between the City Council’s Port Hills Ranger Service, the Port Hills Trust Board, and the Mount Vernon Management Committee. |
