Step into the past
Set aside a Sunday soon for a tour of the
Cracroft Caverns. Dug out of the hills
behind Princess Margaret Hospital in
Cashmere, the caverns were built secretly
during World War 2. If the Japanese had
invaded they would have served as a nerve
centre of the South Island’s defence.
Happily, they were never needed and were
sealed and forgotten for 45 years, until
1987. Now owned by the City Council, the
tours feature historical stories, legends and
gossip and an insight into national security.
The tours take about 40 minutes, cost $5
for a family and will run from 10am, 11am,
12, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm on these
Sundays: 1 September, 6 October, 3
November and 1 December. For more
information, call the Council on 941 6840. |
