Primary Cultural Festival

Primary Cultural Festival
Tuia te Kakano, the Red Warriors of Chisnallwood Intermediate, set the stage alight at last year's primary schools Cultural Festival. Among those pictured are Ben Walker (front right), Legion Williams (second from right) and, beside him, Mark Marriott.

A “breathtaking smorgasboard of multicultural performances, guest performers, visual art exhibition and celebrity MCs” is promised by organisers of this year’s Christchurch Primary Schools Cultural Festival, on at the Town Hall from 12-15 August.

Featured in the City Council-supported event will be traditional and contemporary performances by more than 1600 children from 45 of Canterbury’s primary and intermediate schools and performance groups. In all, they represent more than 10 cultures.

This year’s theme is, Celebrating our Treasures — land, sea and sky (Whakamana o tatou taonga ko Papatuanuku, Tangaroa me Ranginui).

The Festival concerts run from 7 to 9.15pm each day, with 12.30-2.30pm matinee performances on the Tuesday and Thursday (13 and 15 August).

The festival’s celebrity MCs will be Jason Fa'afoi, from TVNZ’s What Now show and Matai Smith and Reikura Morgan from Pukana.

Cultural Festival 2002 is a opportunity to experience an authentic, vibrant celebration of Aotearoa’s many cultures.
