Capital clash

Capital clash

On behalf of Christchurch, Mayor Garry Moore has accepted a challenge from Wellington to engage in a series of contests in the northern city from 9-17 August.

Dubbed the Clash, the North Islanders presented their challenge in the form of a scroll signed by Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast.

The scroll says the event will “provide an opportunity for the fine upstanding citizens of Canterbury to demonstrate in a public display of skill, artistry and athleticism, their sporting prowess.”

The idea, according to organisers, is to give provincial pride a wider voice. They hope this first inter-city clash, featuring at least a dozen sporting codes, will begin a nation wide movement.
