The City Council’s Walking School Bus project is still going strong at several Christchurch primary schools.

Started last year to encourage safe and active travel to school, they are operating at Paparoa Street, Gilberthorpe, and Beckenham schools.

The Walking School Bus project aims to develop a "network" of walking school buses at participating schools by surveying families and mapping out potential routes.

The Council works closely with schools to carry out this work.

Waimairi School has also taken part this year, with the benefit of using guidelines that have resulted from the project.

Gilberthorpe School has a walking school bus that has grown to include over 20 children at times.

To make things fun they sometimes have theme days, such as wearing rabbit ears leading up to Easter.

The Walking School Bus project is part of the Council’s Safe Routes To School programme, which aims to encourage safe and active travel to school, and to improve the safety of the school journey.

For more information about the Walking School Bus, or on addressing safety issues regarding the journey to school, contact Paul Cottam, Safe Routes To School Coordinator, ph 941 8299, or visit the web site at http://www.ccc.govt.nz/saferoutes
