Lions will upgrade ex-nursery building

An old nursery built by the former Waimairi District Council in Burnside Park is to be refurbished by the Waimairi Lions Club for use as a community centre.

The club estimates the cost of upgrading at about $73,000. The club will lease the building from the Council for use by the club, other like-minded service clubs and other groups.

Originally, the building was used as a potting shed-administration building for the nursery in the park.

After amalgamation the Council’s nursery operations were moved to Linwood and the large-tree nursery placed at Harewood.

Since then the building has become derelict and vandals have broken most of the windows and wrecked interior fittings.

Fires were also lit in the building but it is now secured against access.

The building is structurally sound and cannot be shifted.

More than 30 car parks are nearby and these will be available for use once upgrading of the building is completed.

A children’s play area is also close by and the Lions Club sees this as complementing the community use of the building.

The Lions Club, which has already gained $10,000 from the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board towards refurbishment of the building, has been told of community support for use of the building.

If the club did not renew its lease in future the building will revert to Council ownership at no cost.

The same club recently built a footbridge over the Styx River in Styx Mill Basin Reserve for the Council.
