Eye Spy at McDougall . . . Short art appreciation courses for beginners at the Robert McDougall Art Gallery will help visitors better understand the works on display. The Eye Spy programme is focused on the art works on exhibition in the Gallery and gives the course participant a new awareness of and a way of looking at art that they may not have used before. The group is kept to a maximum of 12 to enable easy discussion and shared comments. As the works come from the Gallery’s Collection, citizens are being offered this special chance to become much better acquainted with the city’s art collection. It also provides an opportunity to test opinions about the artwork and extend vocabularies of art terms. The Eye Spy courses are offered at the McDougall on a weekday morning, or on a Saturday, with time taken during each of the sessions for a brief tea or coffee break and a chance to get to know the members in the group. Next courses: Tuesday 10.25 - 12.15pm, June 19. Saturdays 1 - 3pm, June 23, 30, July 7. Saturdays 1 - 3pm, July 28, August 4, 11, 18. Other days and dates available — inquire at the Gallery. The Eye Spy programme covers: an introduction to some of the major European and New Zealand landscape conventions and styles; an introduction to portraiture and the development of contemporary portrait styles; the development of the New Zealand art scene as presented in the works from Christchurch 1890s - 1950s; and an introduction to a number of contemporary styles. The course fee is $25 payable at the first session. Enrolments are essential because of the small groups. Phone the Gallery’s Education office: 941 6973 to register.
