Neighbourhoods are set to sparkle...
Neighbourhood Week 2001 will be held from Saturday 27 October to Friday 2 November. It is a special week set aside to highlight the importance of neighbours getting together, to improve their lives and the lives of others. The City Council has a Neighbourhood Week Joint Board Committee which held the first special week last year. The committee says it wants neighbours to get to know each other better. "Knowing your neighbours helps with safety in your street, makes you feel secure, gives you a sense of belonging. Helpful to police "It’s often the first step towards forming a Neighbourhood Support Group, and these are hugely helpful to the Police," a committee spokeswoman said. Most of the committee are members of the six Community Boards around Christchurch and planning for this year’s event has already started. "Neighbourhood Week has really caught on as an idea. "The word is starting to spread into the business community too. "This is really encouraging. "Nobody owns this idea — the more who get involved, the merrier," she says. Early planning is the key to success. "It might sound silly talking about October in July, but now is the time for people to start planning celebrations for Neighbourhood Week. "It is time for streets to get together and get the ball rolling," she says. "Who’s going to start things off in your street? "Neighbours should start discussing ways they can celebrate Neighbourhood Week. "It doesn’t have to be a huge party — it might be as simple as sharing a cup of coffee or stopping to say hello. "Street parties are very popular, and each Community Board has a little bit of funding set aside to help out." Competitions for children will be a feature of this year’s celebrations.
