Sizzling week for neighbours

Residents are being encouraged to meet their neighbours and improve their communities through Neighbourhood Week, 28 October to 3 November.

Grants are available to groups and individuals who organise neighbourly events for the week.

It's a sunny Sunday afternoon. The street is humming. Children are playing in front yards and barbecues are sizzling. Balloons festoon mailboxes, chalk drawings cover footpaths. An elderly lady, sitting in the shade of a tree on the berm, talks with a neighbour she's always nodded to but has only just met for the first time. This is Neighbourhood Week in action - 28 October to 3 November.

"It can be very hard to meet your neighbours, especially if you've lived in your street for a long time and haven't managed it to date," says the chairperson of the Neighbourhood Week committee, Cr. Sue Wells. "The whole focus of the week is on people meeting people, however they care to do it."

Christchurch City Council Community Boards have small sums of money available, by application, for groups or individuals prepared to get things going in their neighbourhoods. "Whether it's a street party, a gathering at the local school, or some other form of 'neighbour meeting neighbour', it will be worth doing," Sue says. "Having good links within our neighbourhood is absolutely critical . . . having another pair of eyes looking out for you makes all the difference to community safety, and to how you feel about your neighbourhood."

Events around the city will include colouring competitions; parties for adults and children; fun with balloons and chalk, and whatever else neighbourhoods decide to do.

The committee would like to hear about people’s plans for Neighbourhood Week. Contact Sue Wells on 332 1611 or 025 229 0505.
