Entertainment aplenty for anniversary

Anniversary Weekend - 15-19 December

An eclectic mix of entertainment is on offer in December to celebrate Christchurch and Canterbury's 150th anniversary.

The first big event will be the 1850 Ball in Victoria Square on Friday 15 December. Dress formally or in period costume and dance the night away to big band sounds and contemporary music.

The ball is the only event that is ticketed - tickets cost $45 from Ticketek.

The next evening, Saturday, Son et Lumiere "Turning Point - i mua: a muri" will be staged in Cathedral Square.
This sound, light, performance and fireworks show will tell the story of the region's history, achievements and milestones.
The event is free and Council carparks will be open until 1am.

On Sunday morning at 10am a civic service will be held in front of the Christchurch Cathedral, featuring a brass band, choral music and cathedral bells.

A new sculpture of Christ will be unveiled during the service along with the Cathedral columbarium, near Turning Point 2000's contemporary sculpture Chalice.

A giant video screen will enable everyone in the square to follow the service, which will end with the start of The Grand Parade.

The Grand Parade - A Living History, from the square to the Botanic Gardens, will celebrate our heritage and the strength and diversity of our community.

Local cultural, ethnic, community, sports and performing arts groups will take part, with the New Zealand Army and Navy Bands.

On Sunday afternoon a Victorian Garden Party will be held in the Botanic Gardens from noon to 5pm. People are asked to come in Victorian style, with picnics, and enjoy music, roving musicians, puppet shows, storytellers and other old-fashioned entertainment.

There will be punts, horse and carts, tennis, croquet and petanque.
