Chills, thrills and spills

Christchurch Winter Carnival will be the appearance of Eddie "the Eagle" Edwards.

Eddie describes himself as "too sexy" for his skis.

He is a British Olympic ski jumper and international alpine skier who first represented Britain in skiing at the 1987 World Championships in Olberstdorf and the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary.

He is also a singer, whose single, Fly Eddie Fly, reached the top 50 music charts in England, and he commentates for ABC Sports (USA) and presents for Radio 5 in England.

Eddie will participate in the Big Air Challenge in Victoria Square on 7 August. The challenge is part of the Winter Carnival’s Insane Games, which are based on the Extreme Olympics in the USA.

Other games events include the Ultimate Assault, a mountain bike-skate-kayak race; snow-rafting at Mount Hutt; street luging and bobsledding.

The winter carnival, which is core funded by the Council, will also feature a charity dinner with Sir Edmund Hillary at Christchurch Casino; a masquerade ball; special events at Mount Hutt, and a free public session at Alpine Ice Sports Arena.

One of the aims of the carnival is to attract North Island skiers to the South Island and package travel deals are being offered. However, many events are designed for local people, such as the Avon River Rally Walk, senior citizens’ concert and an art billboard competition for school children.

For more information contact Wendy Folau on 384 7242 or carnival manager Andrew O’Loughlin on 365 2352.

EVENTS ON THE WEB

EVENTS ON THE WEB

A new website launched at the beginning of this month offers visitors and locals a one-stop-shop for information on almost anything happening in Christchurch.

The site, http://www.bethere.org.nz/ is an initiative from the Council's Leisure Unit.

"For the first time Christchurch has one site incorporating all activities in the City," says project manager Monique Alisphahic.

"It is user friendly; offering easy and useful access to events, their details and contact points."
On entering the site, users are presented with several options.
A calendar showing today's date allows them to choose any day of the year to check for events.
They may also scroll through day by day, week by week or month by month.

A powerful search feature is also offered where key words will pull up any event containing those words in their title or description.
Another handy feature is the category search.
This allows users to choose from a number of pre-set categories such as sports and leisure, gardening, and music.
They can then either search within these parameters or view all activities.
Clicking on the link of the chosen activity takes you to a details page.
This in-depth material on the event includes contact information and a nifty option of mailing the event.
By filling in a friend's details and clicking "send" they'll get full details of the event sent to them immediately by email.

An important feature is the "Create an Event" page.
This allows anyone to fill in details of their own event with a view to it being included in the site.
The details will be viewed by one of the team and, assuming it is suitable, up-loaded immediately on to the Internet.

Interested parties may also subscribe to an events notification database.

Here they complete a form highlighting their interests and will automatically receive details of upcoming events that met their needs.

Leading young cellists coming to City

Twenty-one of the world's best young celists have been chosen to compete in the third Adam Australasian International Cello festival and Competition in Christchurch this month (19 to 25 July).

They will be competing for a package that include a performance with the New Zealand Symphgony Orchestra, a compact disk recording and $8000.

"Music lovers should make the most of the opportunity to see these cellists as many are destined for successful international careers as soloists," says festival artistic director Dr Alexander Ivashkin, head of cello at the university of Canterbury.

Chamber musicians of worldwide renown wil also appear on the competition jury and as guest recitalists.

The concerts will be in the Great Hall at the Arts Centre, the Town Hall and James Hay Theatre. Master classes will be held in the Great Hall and School of Music recital room. Tickets are available from the Arts Centre Visitors' Centre and Ticketek (ph 337 8899).

Limited door sales may be available.
