Help for parents
Parenting Programmes and Support Services Christchurch parents have a useful new resource in the form of a help directory. Called Parenting Programmes and Support Services, the directory has been produced by Christchurch City Council children's advocate Lyn Campbell.

The directory covers some 120 different organisations, with information on agencies providing parenting assistance in areas as diverse as midwifery and family planning to adoption and foster care to assistance for families of children with cancer, autism or other special needs.

Bus Stops Moving

From Monday 20 July, with redevelopment of Cathedral Square almost complete, a number of bus stops will move from their temporary locations to new permanent positions.

Sunday Free Parking at Lichfield St

Lichfield St car park building is open on Sundays with free parking for City Centre shoppers. Over 800 parking spaces are available in the Christchurch City Council managed building and from 9 am to 5 pm each Sunday they are free to cater for increasing numbers of visitors to the City Centre's numerous shops, cafes and restaurants which are now open on Sundays.The Park Royal car park in Kilmore St is also open Sundays, with standard charges applying.

Support for Park

Conditional support has been given by the Christchurch City Council for $4.2 million towards the re-development of Jade Stadium at Lancaster Park, to bring the park to the standard required to host high profile international sports events. Council will underwrite the project if sufficient interest can be generated in the sale of corporate suites at the park.


Festival Brings Jazz Stars to City

Christchurch becomes the jazz capital of New Zealand in August with the first Christchurch International Jazz Festival.

Part funded by the Christchurch City Council the 14-22 August event will turn the Arts Centres Great Hall into a Cotton Club style venue for shows in various jazz styles, including tributes to jazz legends Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington and Fats Waller.

International artists performing at the festival include American jazz trumpeter Mr Bobby Shew, Australian pianist Judy Bailey and Dutch tenor saxophonist Dick De Graaf. Local stars Malcolm McNeill, Stu Buchanan and Doug Caldwell will also feature along with Wellington based combo the Bossa Novas and Auckland's Karen Hunter.

Master classes, movies, a new artist showcase, lectures and lunchtime concerts are also part of the festival.
