Architects impression of the new New Brighton library |

Traditional library features blended with easy access to the latest technology and an innovative layout design will make the new New Brighton Library a unique facility, says Christchurch City Council community librarian Susan Coleman.
Due to be built at the Pier Terminus by mid 1999, the library will provide something for everyone, with books, magazines, newspapers and audio-visual material alongside the internet, email and word processing, plus special facilities for local history, Maori language and a community activity area for children.
"We really want this library to be a place that will excite and stimulate people. It will be a lot bigger than our current location and have a range of features to really set it apart", says Susan.
Technology in the new library's media centre will enable anyone to use computers for word processing, electronic mail, the internet and even a Maori language interface to the world wide web. Other possibilities might include voice operated computer systems and large print options.
An overhead gantry will feature interactive technology providing people of all ages with a fun way to learn. Activities on the gantry will be regularly updated.
Even the placement of books will be different. Arranged according to an innovative system known as the living room concept, books on similar topics will be placed near each other, making it easier for people to browse through related subjects.
A community activity area called The Pad, retail shops and a cafe with views of the sea are among other community facilities planned for the Pier Terminus building. A construction contract is expected to be awarded in late July.
